Ingredients

  • 1 can of surströmming (fermented herring)
  • 4 medium potatoes, boiled and peeled
  • 1 small red onion, finely chopped
  • 1 cup sour cream or crème fraîche
  • Fresh dill, chopped
  • 4-6 flatbreads (such as tunnbröd)
  • Butter (for spreading)
  • Optional: 1-2 hard-boiled eggs, chopped

Instructions

Prepare the Potatoes

Boil the potatoes until tender, then peel and slice them.

Open the Can of Surströmming

This should ideally be done outdoors due to the strong smell.

Use a bucket of water to open the can underwater to minimize the odor.

Prepare the Flatbreads

Spread a thin layer of butter on each flatbread.

Assemble the Surströmming Sandwich

Place a few slices of boiled potatoes on each buttered flatbread.

Add pieces of surströmming on top of the potatoes.

Sprinkle finely chopped red onion and fresh dill over the surströmming.

Add a dollop of sour cream or crème fraîche on top.

Optional

Add chopped hard-boiled eggs to the sandwich for extra flavor and texture.

Serve

Fold the flatbread over the filling or roll it up to eat as a sandwich.
