In a large pot, bring the 4 cups of water to a boil.
Add the salt to the boiling water.
Gradually add the maize meal to the boiling water, stirring continuously with a wooden spoon or a whisk to prevent lumps from forming.
Reduce the heat to low.
Cover the pot with a lid and let it simmer for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. The pap should become thick and smooth.
If the pap becomes too thick, you can add a little more water to achieve the desired consistency.
Once the pap is cooked and has reached a smooth consistency, remove it from the heat.
