If using a cocoa pod, cut it open and scoop out the cocoa nibs. If using cocoa powder, skip this step.
In a large pot, bring 4 cups of water to a boil. Add the cocoa nibs, cinnamon stick, and cloves. Reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
After simmering, strain the cocoa mixture through a fine sieve to remove the solids, leaving you with a rich cocoa liquid.
Return the cocoa liquid to the pot and stir in the sugar to taste. Heat the mixture over medium heat until the sugar is fully dissolved. Add milk and stir well. You can also add vanilla extract at this stage if you like.
Pour the cocoa tea into cups and enjoy hot.
