Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs clear. This helps remove excess starch.
In a large pot, bring the water to a boil. Add the salt and vegetable oil or butter if using.
Add the rinsed rice to the boiling water. Stir briefly to prevent sticking.
Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot with a lid, and simmer for about 18-20 minutes, or until the rice is tender and the water has been absorbed.
Remove the pot from heat and let it sit, covered, for 5 minutes.
Fluff the rice with a fork before serving.
