Cut the rye bread into small cubes or strips, about 1/2-inch in size.
In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil or butter over medium heat.
Add the bread cubes to the skillet and cook, stirring frequently, until they are golden brown and crispy.
Add the minced garlic and caraway seeds (if using) to the skillet. Continue to cook for another 1-2 minutes, or until the garlic is fragrant and lightly toasted.
