Ingredients

  • 2 cups dried sorrel petals (hibiscus flowers)
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 cup sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 1-2 cloves (optional)
  • 1 cinnamon stick (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • Juice of 1 lime or lemon (optional)
  • Fresh mint leaves (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

Boil Water

Bring 4 cups of water to a boil in a large pot.

Add Sorrel

Add the dried sorrel petals to the boiling water. If using, add the cinnamon stick and cloves.

Simmer

Reduce heat and let the mixture simmer for about 15-20 minutes. This helps to extract the color and flavor from the sorrel petals.

Add Ginger

Stir in the grated fresh ginger. Continue to simmer for an additional 5 minutes.

Cool and Strain

Remove the pot from heat and let it cool to room temperature. Once cooled, strain the mixture through a fine sieve or cheesecloth into a large pitcher.

Sweeten

Add sugar to the strained liquid while it is still warm, stirring until completely dissolved. Adjust the amount of sugar according to your taste preference.

Flavor

Stir in vanilla extract and lime or lemon juice, if using. These add extra flavor and balance the drink's sweetness.

Chill

Refrigerate the Sorrel Drink until it is cold.

Serve

Enjoy your meal!
