In a large saucepan, bring the water to a boil.
Gradually add the maize meal to the boiling water, stirring constantly to prevent lumps from forming.
Reduce the heat to low and continue to cook, stirring occasionally, until the mixture thickens and the maize meal is cooked through. This usually takes about 15-20 minutes.
Stir in the salt and sugar or honey to taste.
If using, add the diced mango to the mixture and cook for an additional 5 minutes until the mango is heated through and slightly softened.
For a richer flavor, stir in the butter.
